चातुर्मास क्या है?

चातुर्मास (चतुर्मास) का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'चार महीने'। यह एक ऐसी अवधि है जो वर्षा ऋतु में आती है और विशेष रूप से पवित्र मानी जाती है। इस चार महीने की लंबी अवधि की शुरुआत देवशयनी एकादशी  से होती है, जो आषाढ़ महीने के उज्ज्वल आधे (शुक्ल पक्ष) का ग्यारहवां चंद्र दिवस है (जो ग्रेगोरियन महीनों के जून-जुलाई में पड़ता है)। देश भर में विविध संस्कृतियों के लिए धन्यवाद, देवशयनी को विभिन्न भाषाओं में अलग-अलग नामों से पुकारा जाता है, तेलुगु में तोली, मराठी में आषाढ़ी एकादशी, महा एकादशी, देवपोली, पद्मा एकादशी, हरि शयद एकादशी, और बहुत कुछ। चातुर्मास का समापन प्रबोधिनी एकादशी से होता है, जो कार्तिक महीने के चंद्र महीने (अक्टूबर-नवंबर) के उज्ज्वल पखवाड़े का ग्यारहवां चंद्र दिवस है।

हिंदू और जैन संस्कृति में बड़े पैमाने पर महत्व रखते हुए, चातुर्मास को बारिश के चार महीनों के पवित्र महीनों के रूप में माना जाता है जहां हम लोगों को बोलचाल की भाषा में "भगवान सोये हैं" कहते हैं (सर्वशक्तिमान सो रहा है), चातुर्मास से जुड़े योगनिद्रा अवतार का जिक्र करते हैं।

सृष्टिकर्ता ब्रह्मा द्वारा 'नव-श्रृष्टि-निमित्त' (एक नई दुनिया का निर्माण) की प्रक्रिया, जिसके परिणामस्वरुप नारायण अपनी गतिविधियों को रोकते हैं और ध्यान विष्णुशयन (विष्णु निद्रा) में जाते हैं।

A Shloka from the Scriptures for Chaturmas:

वार्षिकांश्चतुरो मासान् वाहयेत् केनचिन्नरः ।
व्रतेन न चेदाप्नोति किल्बिषं वत्सरोद्भवम् ॥

 

Transliteration:
vārṣikāṃścaturo māsān vāhayet kenacinnaraḥ ।
vratena na cedāpnoti kilbiṣaṃ vatsarodbhavam ॥

 

Hindi Translation:
मनुष्य को चतुर्मास में किसी भी प्रकार के व्रत करने चाहिये, अन्यथा मौसमी व्याधि होती है।

 

English Translation:
The yearly caturmāsa should be spent with some type of fasting, otherwise one gets the seasonal diseases.

What is Chaturmas?

Chaturmas (चतुर्मास)​ literally translates to ‘four months’ is a period that falls in the rainy season and is considered especially holy. The beginning of this four-month-long period is marked by Devshayani Ekadashi, which is the eleventh lunar day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Aashadh (which falls in June-July of the Gregorian months). Thanks to the diverse cultures around the country, Devshayani is called different names in different languages, Toli in Telugu, Aashadi Ekadashi in Marathi, Maha Ekadashi, Devpoli, Padma Ekadashi, Hari Shayani Ekadashi, and more. The Chaturmas ends with Prabhodhini Ekadashi, which is the eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Kartik (October-November).

Holding massive significance in the Hindu and Jain culture, Chaturmas is revered as the holy four months of rainy days where we hear people say colloquially “Bhagawan soye hai” (The almighty is asleep), referring to the Yoganidra Avatar associated with Chaturmas.

The process of ‘Nava-Shrishti-Nirmiti’ (creation of a new world) by the creator Brahma, results in the Maintainer Narayana to stop his activities and rest and go in the meditative Vishnushayana (sleep of Vishnu).

एकादशी क्या है?

एकादशी (adkādaashiī) चंद्र पखवाड़े का ग्यारहवां चंद्र दिवस  है, जिसे पक्ष (शाब्दिक अर्थ 'पक्ष' कहा जाता है, लेकिन यहां 'आधा' के संदर्भ में उपयोग किया जाता है)। शुक्ल पक्ष (चन्द्रमा का चमकीला या वैक्सिंग चरण) और कृष्ण पक्ष (चंद्रमा का अंधेरा या भयावह चरण), दोनों मिलकर एक चंद्र मास बनाते हैं। (ग्रेगोरियन सौर महीने के साथ भ्रमित होने की नहीं)।

What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi (Pronunciation- Ēkādaśī) is the eleventh lunar day of the lunar fortnight, called Paksha (literally meaning ‘side’, but here used in the context of ‘half’). The two Pakshas, namely Shukla Paksha (the bright or the waxing phase of the moon) and the Krishna Paksha (the dark or the waning phase of the moon), together make up one lunar month. (Not to be confused with Gregorian Solar month).
